Wilderness Tricks

What you should know about the Wilderness

wildernessentry.jpg

As you all probably know, the Wilderness is a dangerous place,as it is the only place in the game, where a player can attack you without your consent, provided you have ventured deep enough into the Wild, in an attempt to gain your items that you drop when you die.

In this guide, I have compiled PKers experiences and various guide data, and a few of my own and put them into a relatively short and easy to read guide.

Combat Stance

Melee

There are three types of combat in Runescape. There is Ranged, Mage and Melee. When PKing you have to understand how each of them work.

Firstly, I'll begin with Melee, the most powerful combat type. Melee generally can tear through both mage and range, with it's powerful special attacks, such as the dds, which can tear through most armours, with devastating, swift fury, also poisoning the enemy.

Jagex stated that melee would be hit hard against mage, which of course is true, but only if you wear a low mage bonus armour such as rune, and metal armours, but because strength and attack bonus are not effected by rune armour, melee PKers have adapted black dragonhide to fend against mage attacks. Thus making them the most powerful combat to walk the wilderness, alongside the mage.

Mage

It's arguable to whether mage is stronger than melee, but I personally believe that melee is stronger and more effective. Magers are always weak to rangers, no matter what they wear (unless it's not mage armour, but that is pointless), as it is much harder to get a high mage bonus without armour.

Mage has the ablility to aid your overall effort in the wilderness, by using devious spells that can stop your opponent in his tracks, making him easier to cut down.

Spells include:

Teleblock: temporarily stops your opponent teleporting (usful for abyss pking and low-level)
Entangle: Holds your opponent for 15 seconds max
Barrage: Hits multipul targets and does extremely high damage
Ice Barrage: Holds your opponent for 20 seconds max
Smoke Barrage: Poisons opponent
Shadow Barrage: Reduces attack
Blood Barrage: Gives hit points to attacker
Charge: Greatly increases the hit ratio of god spells

Due to the unbelievable power of mages, their armour has been very weak against hard hitting attacks, meaning that a dds will tear right through them.

Many PKers combine each combat stance with another giving them an advantage over the opponent, such as mage and melee. I.e. Ice Barrage 3 times then tear through them with a dds.

Generally mage and melee pkers will wear a Splitbark top instead of a mystic top because it provides a little extra defence and because a mystic top protects over a whip (unlucky for the fellow that found that out)

Range

Despite my love for range, it is still the weakest combat in terms of PKing, because of its low hitting, and relatively slow attacks compared to the ferocious dds specials, although the mage short snap shot can deliver a powerful punch to the enemy.

Range has its advantages as well as it's disadvantages. Firstly it will always beat mage, but, because of it's reasonably slow attacks, and wasteful special attacks, you may find that the enemy will run away, and easily escape a thurderous hail of arrows. Benefits also include, rapid hitting i.e. hitting the enemy before they can see you, and decent armour, with a good protect from mage bonus

PKing Locations

True enough you can PK anywhere in the wilderness, but some places are better than others, and there are some places you should avoid altogether. Below is a compiled list of generally all the best places to PK in members and non members. If you don't know much about the wilderness and how it works, click here to read the New-Comers guide

Low Level Varrock

lowlvlvarrock.jpg

This is just above Varrack sewer area. It is generally a non-member, low level pking area, where lower combat leveled players hone their skills at PKing, only for beginners, as it is very easy to walk away from a fight. Mainly every PKer here in f2p is a pure.

Found from level 1-5 wilderness

Hill Giants

hillgiants.jpg

Hills giants are also mainly for non members. This area is a multi-combat area, meaning anyone can attack anyone, as long as they are within the wilderness level boundary, thus meaning that you can gang up on a character, effectively killing him/her faster.

Due to this multi combat area, the hill giant ruins are a primary stopping point for most f2p clans. This area can be risky if you are not prepared with good food and with your clan or allies. Also, shallow walls, provide good cover to hide from range or mage attacks, and low walls are good to range from, giving you the advantage, as it takes meleers time to walk around the wall, and it is on raised ground, so you can see your opponent before he sees you.

Watch out for clan rushes and death dots (explained later)

This area is within level 16-20 wilderness

Demonic Ruins

daemonicruins.jpg

Demonic ruins is in high level, multi combat wilderness so it is the ideal place to clan PK, or to lure to (look further down for information on luring).
It provides decent cover to hide against mage and range attacks and is also an ideal location for clan wars. Be sure to stay clear of here if you are single pking because it is often a clan log in location. Frequently in members tresure hunters will venture up to the demonic ruins, so if you are lucky you could get some pots and sharks of him/her.

Found in 46-47 wilderness

Fortress

nitefortresspk.jpg

The Dark Knights Fortress and surrounding areas, are the 'pro' individual PKing areas in the F2P game, the cream of the crop PK here, so watch you back.

Good tactics here involve luring and clan charges (see further below for more details)

If you are with a F2P clan, use the members dragon pit to switch servers, then log in and rush the fortress. If you are getting attacked and can't shake the attacker, use the multi story castle to log out by climbing the ladder up and down until you lose your attacker, or run further south to the mine nearer Edgeville, and get into combat with an NPC there.

Watch out for PJer's here, as that's what everyone does. Trust no one, as further up you move into multi combat areas. This is also a good place to lure a person north, and backstab them.

Abyss Area

abysspking.jpg

The Abyss is for mage PKer's usually above level 75-80 combat, they will freeze, and possibly teleblock a runecrafter, to kill rapidly and get a glory and possibly a set of dragonhide armour.

To PK runecrafters here successfully, you MUST mage attack, I advise you use an ice ancient magic attack, such as Ice Barrage or Ice Blitz, use this 3 times, then dds special until they are dead. Alternatively you could entangle and teleblock, then cast a few God spells, and tear through them with a dds.

This type of PKing, is easy, as most of the runecrafters will not have prayer or food, but it can get boring as there is no adventuring or good PK spoils except possibly the odd glory and dragon hide.
A lot runecrafters have adapted a way to get past the PKer, so it may all be a waste of time. Personally, what I do to avoid a PKer is:
If you are closer to the mage that to Edgeville, run straight to the mage because the mage teleport is not affected by teleblock. If you get caught by a ancient magic attack, use a prayer potion to use protect item, drop your pouches. A glory WILL protect over all hides, but NOT over a rune pick, so if you have a rune pick you must drop it. Use the glory to teleport back to Edgeville and pick up your pouches.

Found is Wilderness level 5-6

Rune Rocks

runerocks.jpg

Rune Rocks are good for members and non members. Its single combat and easy enough to kill a rune miner and earn yourself some easy cash.
Found in level 46 Wilderness

Green Dragons

There are a few green dragon spots in the wilderness, people normally PK the hunters here, trying to get a few pieces of rune. It's generally a place where alot of decent PKers PK, so watch your back. In saying that it's fairly easy to teleport away, but be warned, you will be called a teleport nub. Officially I am a teleport nub as well, so your not the only one if you do teleport.

Mage Bank

magearenapk.jpg

The Mage Bank is the most dangerous place in members Wilderness, it's where high levels wearing good equipment PK, alot of ehips and barrows have been lost here. Only PK here if you dont mind losing what you have, or if you are a die-hard PKer.

You can get to the mage bank by using the Ardougne teleport lever, and slashing the web and heading west until you reach the Mage Bank.

Watch out for PJers and teleblocker, my friend is an expert escape artist in mage bank clan situations, so will have to add some information on his best escape routes

The Mage Bank is in high level wilderness, level 53-54

The Wilderness agility course is a good place to PK, if you mage or range strike anyone coming across the agility balance entrance, they will fall into a multi combat area, meaning you can get a team to mage/range attack them.
Personally I have never PKed here, so I am unsure to whether many people PK here, but when I train agility I never see a PKer about.

Other PKing areas

1. Low level edgeville wilderness world 18
2. Members gate into deep wilderness
3. Chaos Elemental (rush attack parties, and crash)
4. Members wilderness portals
5. Chaos Temple for DMs
6. Deserted Kepp where you teleport from Ardougne

Wilderness Tactics

Spamming - This involves typing lots of words in red writing near or around the enemy getting attacked, so he is unable to see his HP bar, causing him/her to panic.

Death Dot - Getting your entire clan to stand on the same spot on the map, making them look like one person on the mini map, when the enemy gets close enough you pop out and own him/her

Player Jumping (PJing) - killing an opponent in single or multi wild, straight after they kill another character, meaning they are weak and unprepared for the attack. This is very common in the wilderness.

Back stabbing (BSing) -This again is very common in the Wilderness, so don't be hurt when someone does it. It involves you getting friendly with a PKer, asking him to team, then killing him with yourself or your clan.

Luring - This involves a single player wearing decent equipment that a PKer will be atracted to, you run away when the PKer attacks you and run up into multi combat Wilderness, where your clan will be waiting to take them down.

Rushing - Rushing involves charging your clan in to a multi combat zone, and everyone ganging on one guy, then moving onto the next. Works best if you have teamspeak. Find it here

Crashing - Crashing is just picking off event players, i.e. meaning you pick of players that are in an organised war or KBD trip or chaos elemental trip

Wilderness Abrevs

RR - Rune rocks
GD - greater demons
PO - Member Portals
DD - Death dot

Wilderness Scams

Whip Scam

This scam has been used many times, it has even been used on me, but I was smart enough to know what it was. This is how it works:

A player asks you to help him out. In my situation is was a clan sign up. He says he'll pay you 300-400k if he is allowed to attack you while you wield a whip, because he needs a whip kill picture to sign up to a clan.

You agree and go 1 item with a wielded whip. The player using this scam will say he'll pay you before you are nearly dead.

Just before you die, he will say that he doesn't have the money, but he has 4 mystic tops or 4 dragon longswords. If you accept, he will trade you these four items.

When you die you will protect the mystic tops or dragon longswords over the whip, making the player who done it a whip richer.

This trick only works on really stupid people, so don't fall for it.
Below is the chat with the guy who tried this on me.

whipscam.jpg

For the record I didn't fall for it :)

Edgeville Lure Scam

This is a great scam if you can pull it off, Be warned, that if you try this you will receive a very low reputation, but don't worry I don't it's not against the rules, neither is the whip scam, but no doubt Jagex will make up some crap about fair play and all that, but sure what the hell. There are many ways to make it work this is one of them:

Someone offers to buy somethings of you, or else you offer to sell it to a guy roughly the same combat level as yourself.
To find the victims combat level, you first must know his name, which you will know from the forums, and you can check his combat level on many of the combat calculators on Runescape help sites, the ones I am thinking of can be found here
They you say that you will buy or sell the item at Edgeville, but this will probably have to be done over private message, as most forums merchants know the scam, and many will say on their posts: No Edgeville trades.
When you get there, you will say you are near the house by the wilderness or in Osiachs house, which is the man who sells rune plates.
When you or the victim get there with the items or money, you trade them and run slighly into wilderness, so when they click trade on their chat bar they will follow you into the Wilderness. You can then Ice Barrage the life out of the target, till they die and you get all the goodies.
In Osiach's house, if you stand at the back of the house you are in level 1 wilderness, allowing someone to attack you or allowing you to attack someone.

Personally I don't like this scam, because a friend of mine lost alot of money this way, so I hope I have done you a big favour, you should now be able to recognise that it is a scam. I will not be held responsible if someone goes against my wishes and uses this scam for their own gain.
