Newcomer's Guide

All a newcomer needs to know about the land of RuneScape

welcome.jpg

After completing the long and Arduous Tutorial Island you will get teleported to the mainland, which is Lumbridge castle, your first stop in RuneScape.  In Lumbridge  this will be your first location where you can interact with other online players, as on Tutorial Island you were not able to communicate with public characters or private characters.

Getting Around

Gettind around for the first time can be tricky and hard to get used to, but of course practice will make perfect. Remember there is a world map button at the top of the screen, and the diagram below is a picture of the navigation in RuneScape. The mini map give a small undetailed image of where you are, and also gives the compass directions

Because RuneScape is such a vast place, you have been given the option to run to places, the run button can be located in the running man icon in your inventory.

The energy of the character is displayed when you click on this icon, like in the picture below. The more you run the more your energy will decrease (makes sense). Factors that affect the drepreciation of your energy are the amount you weigh, i.e. you weight of your clothing and anything you carry is added on, and your agility level. You can see this shown below.

Lumbridge

As I have said previously Lumbridge is the starting location for every new character, a birthplace if you will, and also a death place, as you will respawn in Lumbridge if you die (unless you have completed the wanted quest).

For a newcomer, Lumbridge is home to a gold mine of basic amenities and raw resources, ranging from monsters to train on, places to fish and food to cook. The map below out lines a few of the main places to visit in Lumbridge.

The Cow pen, across the bridge to the east of the castle, is the ideal place for a newcomer to train his/her combat stats. Each cow having 8 hp, means that the trainer will receive 24xp each cow they kill in that chosen stat, whether its attack, strength, defence or range (mage differs). I would advise training here for a short period of time, gathering every piece of raw beef they drop and cooking it, to give you cooking experience. An axe and tinderbox was supplied from Tutorial Island, and the full ‘know-how’ on how to use them was taught to you. I wouldn’t advise collecting the hides just at the moment, as they will weigh you down and you don’t have enough money or experience to ‘bank’ them in Al Karid bank.

Also, goblins which are shown in the picture below, can be a good place to train, they are fairly weak, and a level 3 character should be able to beat half a dozen or so before they may need to eat. Goblins drop a variety of equipment, varying from 'chef's hats' to 'bronze square shields', which you can equip to better your defence bonus.

Lumbridge is a centrepiece to the newcomers of Runescape. It is closely connected, by paths and well-distinguished signs to point you in the direction of neighbouring towns, such as Varrock, Draynor and Al Karid. Generally most beginners will stay clear of Al Karid, as a fee has to be paid to get access to it, and more beginners will veer towards the big city of Varrock, looking for their fortune

Varrock

Varrock could be considered the capital city of RuneScape, it is where many of the f2p (free to play) characters meet to buy and sell, train and mine in one of the several mining areas, in one of the biggest cities in RuneScape. It is generally where all the hubbub is happening, it's where you can meet new players, make a profit by selling your wares and train your levels up to compete with others..

Areas of interest in Varrock are show in the map below.

these include:

Mining Areas
Varrock Sewers
Banks (east and west)
Wilderness

Varrock Sewers

Varrock sewers are commonly the place for most low leveled and high leveled players train. upon entering it (shown on the map) you will enter a sewer room full of rats, ideal to train on, as they drop their meant for you to cook and heal with.

Deeper in the sewers you can come across bigger, and higher levelled monsters, such as moss giants (level 42) and skeletons (level 21), you can judge how strong you think you are, and judge yourself when you want to move onto the deeper parts of the Sewer. The picture below is of the rats in varrock sewers.

Mining Areas

In the varrock mining areas you can find a wide variety of rocks. In the east you can find copper and tin, to make bronze, as well as iron. In the western mine, you can find iron, silver, clay and tin.

There is a specific way to gather your ores and any other raw materials, including fish and logs, adn they follow the same rules as each other. Firstly, mine, chop or fish a full invent of raw materials, then bank these at the nearest bank, keep donig this over and over again to gain the fast experience towards your next level. Secondly, after you gather a huge amount of raw materials, process them all in one go, meaning that you cook all your fish, turn all your ores into bars, and burn/fletch or sell all your logs.

Selling your goods

The best places to sell your goods in Varrock, is at the centre, or one of the two banks (as shown on the picture above). There are various ways of selling your goods, but generally they involve shouting out over the street what you are selling, as you have probably noticed already, but it can depend how you shout it out

Chat effects

To get chat effects while your talking, type in the following before you start your sentence (leave no spaces between the following)

green:   (turn writing green)
cyan:    (turns writing cyan)
red:      (turns writing red)
white:   (turns writing white)

flash1: (makes writing flash)
flash2: (makes writing flash)
shake: (makes writing shake)
scroll: (makes writing scroll)
wave: (makes writing wavy)
glow1: (makes wirting glow)
glow2: (makes writing glow)
glow3: (makes writing glow)

The above chat effects can be combined with CERTAIN, but not all others. Your best option is to get started. Remember no spaces, and colours always go first in combos.

Banking

Banks are found in almost every major town in Runescape, they allow you to store your items for use at another time, and allow you to withdraw items that you may need at the moment. Banking is a very regular part of RuneScape, as most players store their raw materials for selling, or for using at another time.

For proctection and security reasons, Jagex have placed an optional pin code on your bank, you can set a pin code by talking to the man or woman at the banking desk. Remember, this is completely optional.

Below is a picture of Varrock bank

Draynor Village

Draynor is the beginner fishers dream. Several fishing spots all clumped together, only only seconds away from the bank. If you think yourself to be a keen fisher, then head to Draynor to catch yourself a huge haul of fish, ready to be cooked and sold. Draynor is also home to an ample collection of willow trees right next to the bank, which can easily be sold to keen member fletchers for 30gp each.

Draynor is situated close to Port Sarim, where you can buy your fishing materials, such as a fishing rod and bait, for bait fishing, as well as feather and a fly fishing rod, for when the time comes when you want to fly fish in Barbarian Village.

The picture below shows all the places of interest in draynor

The above towns that I have described are far from the total amount of towns and villages that are in RuneScape, but I feel they are the most important. Other important towns include Falador, where you can do all your smithing, and mining in the mining guild, and the town of Edgeville, which is the player killing (pking) town

Armour types

When you begin RuneScape the best armour you will be able to wear will be iron. There are alot more different types of armour available and even more in members.
Here is a list of the regular non-member warrior armour, in order of defence level to wear it (excluding dragonhides).

Bronze Armour - level 1
Iron Armour - level 1
Steel Armour - level 5
Mithril Armour (dark blue) - level 20
Adamant Armour (green) - level 30
Rune Armour (lighter blue/cyan) - level 40

All of the above armour types can be made players, but whether or not you can make it depends on your smithing level.

The following armour types works exactly the same for pickaxes for mining and axes for woodcutting. Starting with bronze and moving up to rune.

I hope this will give you some insight on what armour other players are wearing.

You may not know everytype of armour, as an armour type may look unfamiliar to you, but this may be beacuse it is a member armour or a quest/drop/random event item.

The Wilderness

The wilderness is a dangerous place, as it is the only place in free to play where other players can fight you without asking, to try and kill you and get your items. It can be a very dangerous place if you don't know how it works.

Firstly the wilderness is at the very north of the map, so if you keep heading north you will eventually come to it. It is a very barren place, with little or no resources about, apart from the odd mine.

Secondly, you will always be warned before entering the wilderness, so there is no chance of you walking into it without realising.

Thirdly and most importantly, there is a threat level that appears at the bottom right of your screen whenever you enter the wilderness. This threat level tell you how susceptable you are to being attacked. The threat level is displayed as a number ranging from 1-44.
This is how it works. If you are in level 5 wilderness, you can be attacked by character 5 levels above you and 5 levels below you, this means that generally level one wilderness is not as dangerous as level 40 Wilderness.
The threat level will only increae you deeper you go into the wilderness, it does not go up if you stand still.

The picture below shows the threat levels
